Dustdevils Stay Perfect In LSC Play, Declaw The Lady Lions, 3-1

LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International kept its undefeated Lone Star Conference record intact, defeating UAFS 3-1 in just the second home game of the season.

The Dustdevils (13-4, 4-0 LSC) are now just one of two remaining unbeaten teams in LSC play, but it was easy in set one.

Back and forth the entirety of the set, TAMIU battled it out to come away, as the score ended at 29-27.

Set two didn't see a lead larger than four, and that wasn't until the Lady Lions (9-8, 3-3 LSC) took a 23-19 lead late, eventually closing their lone set victory at 25-22.

TAMIU trailed early set three, by a score of 13-8. UAFS elected to take a timeout when the deficit was trimmed to 13-10, but the Dustdevils rode the momentum of those two points by sophomore Yaretzi Ortiz and went on a 13-1 run after the timeout.

The run included an 11-0 run after the Lady Lions made the score 14-12 and the overall run was 15-1 from the 13-8 score.

In the final game-clinching set, UAFS once again held a lead midway through at 13-11. However, a 5-0 TAMIU spurt opened the lead to 16-13 and the Dustdevils went on to close out the Lady Lions, 25-20.

Sophomore Giulia Hortelan filled the stat sheet with a team high 17 kills, 22 digs, a solo block, three block assists, an assist and a service ace.

Graduate student Mackenzie Catalina followed with a double-double of her own, scoring 14 kills on the offensive end and a team high 23 digs defensively.

Sophomore libero Lixai Perez also hit the 20 mark with 22 digs, while freshman setter Emma Lade put up her fourth 50+ assist game with 51 to go alongside 14 digs and two kills.

TAMIU once again hits the road, this time for a pair of games against two of the top teams in the LSC. UT Tyler is first on the schedule and opening serve is at 6 p.m. from Tyler, Texas on Friday, Oct. 6.
