Dustdevils Win 20 For First Time Since 2006, Defeat Mustangs 3-1 On Senior Day

LAREDO, Texas –Texas A&M International volleyball bounced back after its first home loss on Friday, defeating Midwestern State on Saturday 3-1 on Senior Day, earning its first 20-win season since 2006 and clinching a top four seed in the Lone Star Conference Tournament.
 
The Dustdevils (20-6, 11-2 LSC) jumped ahead quickly, taking the opening set 25-13.
 
In the set, TAMIU used three 5-1 runs and a 6-1 run to build the lead throughout, while holding the Mustangs to a negative hitting percentage.
 
In set two, the Dustdevils won again, this time 25-20. TAMIU used an 11-1 run in the set to lead 14-8, and as time went on the lead stayed, but did slim with Midwestern State taking six of seven points later to close the gap.
 
Set three was the one victory for the Mustangs (6-21, 4-10 LSC), winning in extra points, 28-26. It was a set of runs and then back in forth the entire extra time until Midwestern State scored the last two points.
 
TAMIU picked up the offense in set four, winning 25-16 behind a .594 hitting percentage in the set.
 
Tied 4-4 early, the Dustdevils used a 6-1 run to lead by five and then utilized three other 4-1 runs throughout to seal the victory.
 
Two of the three seniors recognize, Megan Menchaca and Mackenzie Catalina each led the charge with 18 kills. Menchaca hit .459 in the contest, while Catalina added 14 digs for the double-double.
 
Sophomore Giulia Hortelan finished with a double-double of her own, having 12 kills and 19 digs, second in digs behind 23 from fellow sophomore Lixai Perez.
 
Freshman setter Emma Lade added 50 assists in the four set win, alongside six digs.
 
TAMIU closes the 2022 home schedule on Wednesday, Nov. 2 against St. Edward's on Hawaiian Night. Opening serve from the KCB is set for 6 p.m.
