LSC Tournament Scenarios For Men's and Women's Basketball Entering Final Week Of Regular Season

LAREDO, Texas – Heading into the final week of the 2021-22 regular season, Texas A&M International women's basketball has clinched a spot in the Lone Star Conference Tournament, while men's basketball is looking to earn a spot of their own.

The top 12 teams earn a place in the LSC Tournament, with first round games taking place on Tuesday, Mar. 1 at campus sites, while the remainder of the tournament takes place at the Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas on Mar. 3, 5-6 for the men and Mar. 4-6 for the women.

Seeds five through eight in both the men's and women's standings will host in the first round, while the top four seeds have a bye straight to Frisco.

Women's Basketball

After going 2-0 last week at home, to finish the season 13-2 in the KCB, women's basketball clinched a spot in the LSC Tournament.

This week, TAMIU faces Western New Mexico (Feb. 21), Cameron (Feb. 24) and West Texas A&M (Feb. 26) all on the road.

The Dustdevils currently sit in ninth place in the LSC, with a 16-8 overall record and 7-6 record in the conference. They are two games behind Cameron who is 14-9 overall and 9-4 in the LSC.

The scenarios for TAMIU to host a first round include:

  • TAMIU must win out and Texas Woman's loses out
  • TAMIU wins out and Cameron loses out
  • TAMIU wins out and Cameron goes 1-2 (one loss must be to TAMIU)
  • TAMIU goes 2-1 and Cameron loses out (TAMIU must beat Cameron)

The Dustdevils can finish as high as eighth in the LSC, but can't drop any lower than the #10 seed due to head-to-head victories of Eastern New Mexico and UAFS. Only Midwestern State can pass TAMIU who is currently in 10th place if the Mustangs go 2-0 and the Dustdevils drop all three. If TAMIU and Midwestern State tie, the Dustdevils hold the head-to-head tiebreak.

Men's Basketball

TAMIU has a much tougher road to make the postseason, as they currently sit 12-12 overall and 4-9 in the LSC, currently sitting in 14th place.

This week, TAMIU faces Western New Mexico (Feb. 21), Cameron (Feb. 24) and West Texas A&M (Feb. 26) all on the road.

Making the scenario harder for the Dustdevils to enter the postseason is Texas A&M-Kingsville having three games that were postponed that will not be made up. Therefore, despite TAMIU holding the head-to-head tiebreak, it would then go to a conference win percentage tiebreak if necessary.

The scenarios for TAMIU to make the LSC Tournament include:
  • TAMIU wins out and UT Tyler loses out (Dustdevils hold head-to-head)
  • TAMIU wins out and TAMUK loses out
  • TAMIU can clinch 11 seed if it wins out and both UT Tyler and TAMUK lose out

The only seeds the Dustdevils can earn if they make the tournament are the 11 or 12 seed.
