Dustdevils Drop Two in Doubleheader

Game 1
Laredo, Texas – The Dustdevils (5-9, 2-2) faced the Texas Woman's Pioneers (5-6, 3-1) in Lone Star Conference play Tuesday afternoon and dropped game one of the doubleheader 2-0.

Erika Cortez got the start on the mound for TAMIU in game one.

The Pioneers got on the board first with an RBI single in the top half of the second. Cortez held the Pioneers to one run until the sixth inning where an RBI single brought in another run for TWU, giving them a 2-0 lead.

Cortez finished the contest pitching seven innings allowing two runs on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

The Dustdevil offense was held to just two hits and one walk in game one with eight strikeouts.

The Dustdevils look to bounce back in game two of Tuesday's doubleheader to even the series.
 
Game 2
Laredo, Texas – In game two of Saturday's double header, the Dustdevils (5-10, 2-3) fell to the Pioneers (6-6, 4-1) by a score of 7-5.

The Dustdevils came out hot to start the game, getting on the board in the bottom of the first with an RBI single from Victoria Gonzalez.

The Pioneers took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second courtesy of two solo home runs, but the lead did not last long as TAMIU answered back with three runs of their own in the home half of the inning.

Kristin Maldonado brought in Damaris Saldivar with a single before Katelyn Luera brought Maldonado and Victoria Espinoza in with a double to left field.

The Dustdevils extended their lead in the third, capitalizing on a Pioneers' error that brought Valerie Loyola into score, giving the Dustdevils a 5-2 lead.

TWU battled back in the sixth, scoring five runs and giving them a 7-5 lead.

The Dustdevils sent three pitchers to the mound in game two. Carla Arellano got the start and pitched five innings and allowed four runs on nine hits with one walk and four striekouts. Celeste Apaez and Zakayia Fredrick closed out the game for TAMIU.

The Dustdevil offense recorded 14 hits in the game, led by Espinoza's 4-4 game. Luera and Gonzalez both added three hits.

The Dustdevils finish the series against the Pioneers Wednesday at 12:15 p.m. at Dustdevil Softball Field.
