SILVER CITY, N.M. — Texas A&M International salvaged a split in Friday's doubleheader against Western New Mexico, dropping the opener 8-2 before bouncing back with a 7-3 win in Game 2 at The Yard.
Game 1: Western New Mexico 8, TAMIU 2
The Dustdevils struck early but couldn't keep pace as Western New Mexico used a multi-inning offensive surge to take the opener.
Sessy Moreno put TAMIU on the board in the first with a solo home run, and Miley Vinton followed with a solo shot in the second to give the Dustdevils a brief 2-1 lead.
Western New Mexico responded immediately, tying the game in the first before taking control with a two-run second inning and adding runs in the third and fourth. A three-run fifth inning—highlighted by a two-run homer from Abbi Markus—put the game out of reach.
TAMIU finished with six hits, with Moreno and Austyn Marriage each collecting two. In the circle, Nevaeh Herrera took the loss after allowing seven runs over 4.2 innings.
Game 2: TAMIU 7, Western New Mexico 3
The Dustdevils responded in a big way in Game 2, using a pair of explosive middle innings to secure the split.
Trailing 2-0 early, TAMIU broke through in the fourth with three runs, highlighted by RBI hits from Queenandra Dunn and Krysta Ruiz to take a 3-2 lead. The Dustdevils added three more in the fifth, capped by a three-run home run from Moreno to extend the advantage to 6-2.
Austyn Marriage added insurance in the seventh with a solo home run, finishing with two runs scored and an RBI. Moreno led the offense with a 2-for-4 performance, three RBIs, and a home run, while Dunn added three hits.
In the circle, Kylie Goad delivered a complete-game effort, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out seven to earn the win.
PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: Sessy Moreno is a sophomore shortstop and utility player for Texas A&M International University and is currently pursuing a degree in Kinesiology. A native of San Antonio, TX, Sessy is the daughter of Deyanira and Zaragoza Moreno and was born on March 1, 2006.
Moreno powered the Dustdevils offensively across both games, going a combined 4-for-8 with two home runs and four RBIs. Her solo homer in Game 1 provided an early spark, while her three-run blast in Game 2 proved to be the decisive swing in TAMIU's win.
