LAREDO, Texas – It was a record night for Texas A&M International on Saturday. The Dustdevils scored all-time highs in total points, 3-pointers and assists in a 137-67 win over the visiting Southwestern Adventist Knights.
TAMIU moved the ball with surgical discipline, consistently making the extra pass for the sure-shot – resulting in the team's 60 percent firing from the 3-point line. The Dustdevils rained 18 long-range launchings, topping the previous record of 15 against Barclay Christian in 2010.
The Dustdevils (6-3, 0-0 Heartland Conference) passed the ball for 42 assists, topping the previous high of 30 against Dallas Baptist in 2009. Ten of the Dustdevils' 11 players came up with at least one helper.
Senior Johnel Gray produced a double-double by dishing a team-high 13 assists to compliment his 10 points.
Seven Dustdevils recorded double-digit point totals.
Leading the way in scoring were a pair of TAMIU bench players with 20 points apiece: junior center Curtis Trotter and junior guard Deonnte Breedlove. Both recorded career-highs in points, while Breedlove cemented career highs in assists (5), rebounds (4), 3-pointers made (6), minutes played (25) and field goals made (7). Trotter's double-double with 11 boards stands as a career mark along with his career-high three assists, 22 minutes played and nine field goals converted.
Vadel Faniel was the Dustdevils third player to record a double-double with 19 points, 11 rebounds, two steals and an assist while shooting 90 percent from the field. Matt Pritchett and team captain Matthew Culliver Jr. both shot 80 (4-for-5) percent from the 3-point line, finishing with 16 and 14 points, respectively. Jordan Clark rose to rock the rims on his way to 15 points.
Kevin Jefferson Jr. (9 points, 5 assists), Jamie Farrie (8 points) and William Wise (6 points, 5 rebounds) contributed off the bench.
The 70-point cushion the game ended with stood as the Dustdevils biggest lead of the night, something they built upon from the opening tip off. TAMIU outscored the Knights 72-25 in the first half at the Kinesiology and Convocation Building.
The same two teams will meet again on Sunday at 2 p.m. for the final of the non-conference affairs. The Dustdevils will then be inactive for 11 days until Dec. 19 when Rogers State visits for a 7:30 p.m. Heartland game. The TAMIU women will play the first game of that doubleheader, starting at 5:30 p.m.
