MBB vs. DBU

Men's Basketball

Post Season Bound!

Box Score LAREDO (February 23) – The TAMIU men’s basketball team wasted no time in their return to conference action Saturday afternoon, defeating Dallas Baptist University 66-63 to earn their fourth consecutive trip to the Heartland Conference Tournament.

In addition to securing a spot in the post season, TAMIU’s win Saturday afternoon brought the Dustdevils (8-5 HC) into a third place tie with rival St. Mary’s University (8-5 HC).  The Dustdevils can surpass the Rattlers next Saturday, when the two teams will meet in the final regular season game of the year.

The Patriots trailed 64-52 with less than five minutes to play, but four consecutive TAMIU misses and a turnover allowed DBU to fire off an 11-0 run to pull within one with 1:29 remaining.  After another TAMIU turnover, Allen Charles took a three that would’ve given DBU a two-point lead, but the shot missed its mark.

Damal Donaldson gave TAMIU a two-point lead hitting 1-of-2 free throws on the other end, before Jayvin Reynolds grabbed a huge defensive rebound and was fouled with only four seconds remaining.  After missing both free throw attempts, Reynolds redeemed himself by deflecting the inbounds pass into the hands of Kevin Jefferson, who made one of two free throws to seal the win.

The Dustdevils committed a season low five turnovers Saturday afternoon, while forcing the Patriots into 13 resulting in 23 TAMIU points.

Junior guards Matthew Culliver and Kevin Jefferson combined for 36 points scoring 18 apiece.  Jefferson also added five assists, four rebounds, and two steals.  The two guards combined to go 12-22 from the field and 2-6 from three point range, while hitting 10-14 free throws.  Johnel Gray finished with 10 points on the day, his fifth straight game scoring in double figures.  Reynolds grabbed a game high eight rebounds.

Nick Fox scored 22 in the losing effort while Cory Carden and Charles Allen were the only other two Patriots in double-digits as they each scored 10. Remy Ndiaye led the Patriots with six rebounds while Jason Gentry handed out eight assists.

TAMIU and St. Mary’s will tip off next Saturday at 4 pm at the TAMIU KCB with third place on the line.
