Box Score LAREDO, Texas – With only a point separating Texas A&M-Kingsville and Texas A&M International University and 15 seconds remaining on Wednesday night, David Horst broke the Javelinas' full-court press in the eventual Dustdevils victory. After leading by 17 points in the first half, TAMIU staved off the Javelinas' second half surge to seal an 88-83 win.
"I was really proud of our players throughout the first half," TAMIU coach Bryan Weakley said. "I was proud of the way they found a way to win in the end. We played the best defense in the first half that we've played all season.
"It was the story of two halves, though, because we lost focus defensively in the second half and almost gave the game away. We have to use this kind of game to learn how to sustain focus for a full 40 minutes."
With TAMIU's lead from a 41-point first half all but evaporated in the final minute of the game, Horst broke through the center of the court while receiving the inbounds pass in stride. He buried the fast-break layup to cap his six points.
Patrick Carlson closed the curtain on the game from the free throw line, after swiping TAMUK into a turnover with three seconds left. His two converted shots from the stripe punctuated his 15-point contribution.
Anthony Alston also finished with 15 points, with 11 coming from the free throw line off 85 percent shooting after being fouled.
Senior forward Vadal Faniel shined brightest with a game-high 19 points and five rebounds in 29 minutes.
The Dustdevils host Southwestern Adventist on Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. at the TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Building.
