On Saturday in San Antonio, it was an all too familiar feeling for the Dustdevils (20-8, 13-5 Heartland). TAMIU fell in double overtime, 74-65, to clinch the No. 2 seed in the Heartland. Arkansas-Fort Smith was idle on Saturday, but secured the regular season championship and right to host the Heartland Tournament as the top seed on March 7-8.
The epic five-combined overtimes now prelude a tournament matchup between the rivals on March 7 – at a time to be determined. The winner of TAMIU and No. 3 St. Mary's (19-7, 12-6 Heartland) will advance to the tournament championship game for a chance at an automatic qualification to the NCAA Division II South Central Regional tournament. As of Feb. 25's poll, TAMIU ranked seventh in the South Central.
