LAREDO, Texas (January 30, 2016) -- The Texas A&M International University Baseball team opened it's 2016 campaign with a Double-Header against Southeastern Oklahoma State. The Dustdevils won Game 1 with a final score of 7-3. Game 2 ended with a final score of 6-3, in favor of the Savage Storm. The Dustdevils are 1-1 after today's games.
Game 1: Dustdevils 7, Savage Storm 3The Dustdevil bats exploded in the first three (3) innings of play Saturday afternoon. After Southeastern Oklahoma struck first in the top of the first inning, TAMIU scored seven (7) unanswered runs. The 7-1 lead after three innings of play proved to be plenty for TAMIU. The Dustdevils highlighted the night with a three (3) run third inning.
Alex Medina and
William Mora came in to score on a wild pitch for the first two runs of the inning. The third run was scored on an
Alexander Cabezas RBI single, scoring
Jeffrey Morgan. At the end of three (3) innings TAMIU led 7-1.
Junior
Osvaldo Raya got the nod in Game 1 for the Dustdevils. Raya pitched 4.1 innings, giving up just one (1) earned run on two (2) hits. Raya recorded seven (7) strikeouts, moving to 1-0 in the 2016 season. Freshman
Nate Kowalik pitched in his first collegiate game. Kowalik went 2 innings, allowing one (1) earned run on just two (2) hits.Â
Medina led the offensive charge for the Dustdevils, going 2-3 with two (2) RBI and one (1) run scored. Morgan went 2-3 at the plate, crossing the plate twice for TAMIU.Â
Game 2: Dustdevils 3, Savage Storm 6Game 2 saw a pitching duel in the making. Neither team recorded a run until a two (2) run fourth for the Savage Storm. The Dustdevils answered in the bottom of the sixth.
Jeremy Valadez hit a sacrafice fly into center, scoring Cabezas from third. Mora followed with an RBI single, scoring
Cody Perez from second. TAMIU took the lead in the bottom of the seventh.
Sergio Pollorena led off the inning with a solo home run, giving the Dustdevils a 3-2 advantage after seven (7) innings of play. Southeastern Oklahoma took the lead back with a four (4) run ninth, leading to the final score of 6-3.
Freshman
Arturo Guajardo saw his first collegiate action, going 2-4 at the plate with two (2) singles. Pollorena went 1-2 at the plate with one (1) RBI on the solo home run. Valadez and Mora each recorded one (1) RBI.
Junior
Dustin Labit made his first start of 2016, pitching 5 innings. Labit struck out four (4), recording two (2) earned runs on six (6) hits.
Justin Diaz pitched 2 scoreless innings, giving up just two (2) hits.Â
The Dustdevils will be back in action Sunday, January 31. TAMIU will finish the weekend series at Jorge Haynes Field, first pitch is slated for noon.
