LAREDO, Texas (November 15, 2016) - The Texas A&M International University Men's Basketball team hosted Texas A&M Kingsville on Tuesday night. The Dustdevils were dealt a 58-60 loss, moving to 3-3 overall.
With two seconds left in regulation, TAMUK sunk a mid-range jumper to go up 60-58. The Dustdevils were forced to heave a full-court pass with one tenth of a second remaining, leading to a 58-60 loss.
Tuesday's game proved to be tight throughout. Through 20 minutes of play the Dustdevils and Javelinas were knotted at 24. TAMIU used a 7-0 run over four minutes to tie the game at 24 with 1:15 remaining in the first half.
Jordan VanDeKop led all scorers through 20 minutes, sinking four shots and two free throws for 12 points.
Bunja Yaboe and
Greg Mason recorded three rebounds in the first 20 minutes,
Kenny Hatch picked up three steals.
The second half would prove to be much of the same as the teams battled until the final seconds. Neither team would lead by double-digits in the final 20 minutes, the Dustdevils would open the largest lead with 3:29 left at seven points and again with 1:15 remaining in regulation. TAMUK tied the game at 58 with :25 left in regulation, taking the lead on a last second shot.
Denzel Bellot led TAMIU in the second half with eight points and four rebounds. Yaboe would add six points, five rebounds, and two blocks.
Head Coach
Bryan Weakley commented after the game, "This was a hard fought game tonight. Both teams competed well. We did not close the game in the last two minutes and need to learn from it."
TAMIU out-rebounded TAMUK 35-32 and forced 22 Javelina turnovers. The Dustdevils would turn Javelina mistakes into 24 points. The TAMIU bench contributed 22 points.
TAMIU is back in action on Friday, November 18. The La Posada Classic begins at 3pm while the Dustdevils host Paul Quinn at 5pm CST.
