TAMIU powers through to claim season sweep over Rattlers

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (February 18, 2016) -- The Texas A&M International Women's Basketball team hit the road to secure their season sweep over St. Mary's in a 57-53 victory on Thursday evening. With the win, the Dustdevils move to 14-10 overall, and 11-5 in Heartland Conference play. The victory also broke the Heartland Conference standings tie between the two schools, placing TAMIU in second place overall.

TAMIU set their tone early by controlling 15 of the first 20 minutes of play. The Dustdevils established a 4-point advantage (29-25) over the Rattlers by the conclusion of the first half. Continuing to build their score through the third quarter, TAMIU entered the final 10 minutes of play with a 7-point lead over of St. Mary's. With four minutes remaining, the Rattlers tied the score at 47-47, sparking the Dustdevils to rally to their finish. TAMIU pulled ahead of the Rattlers by the final buzzer to win by a 4-point margin.

A true team effort was shown by the Dustdevils as the wealth was spread amongst the entire roster. Senior Jessica Prieto led the scoring with 15 points, while also adding 5 boards, 4 assists, 2 blocks and 1 steal. Junior Rosebrooke Hunt added a double-double for the Dustdevils, with 12 points and 10 boards. Senior Keiona Mathews contributed 12 points of her own, which included 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. Junior Hannah Beede captured 10 points and 7 boards in the victory, while Seniors Lizzie Prieto and Chelsea Salom each added 4 tallys for TAMIU. Junior Katia Javier added 2 boards, and Junior Jessica Alvarez collected 2 steals and a rebound.

Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson commented on the win by saying, ""I'm really proud of the team. They fought tonight and grinded out the win." She continued to acknowledge the full team effort by adding, "I thought we handled some adverse situations well and everyone contributed. We need to build off of our defensive effort tonight. We did a good job of paying attention to details on the defensive end and executing the scout."

Up next, the Dustdevils will finish out their 2015-16 regular season campaign on the road. TAMIU faces Oklahoma Panhandle State on Thursday, February 25, and No. 1 Lubbock Christian on Saturday, February 27. TAMIU will be heading to Tulsa, Oklahoma for the Heartland Conference Championship Tournment during the first weekend of March.
