WICHITA, Kansas (March 18, 2016) – The Texas A&M International University Softball team kicked off a Heartland Conference series with the Newman Jets on Friday. TAMIU took game one 3-2 and were dealt a 7-8 loss in game two. The Dustdevils move to 17-21 overall (6-5 HC).
Game 1: TAMIU 3, Newman 2Brandi Giles got TAMIU on the board in the first, driving in
Brittany Mussett. The Jets scored a run in the third and one in the fifth before
Anna Parnin drove in
Chelsea Capello, tying the game at two.
Erika Sanchez followed that with a sacrifice fly, scoring
Alyssa Acuna and giving TAMIU the 3-2 lead.
Delainy Thompson picked up her sixth win, throwing six innings. Thompson struck out four (4), allowing just two (2) runs on seven (7) hits.
Krystal De La Cruz threw the final inning, picking up her second save of the season.
Game 2: TAMIU 7, Newman 8TAMIU scored big early in game two, putting up five (5) runs in the first three innings. The Jets battled back to take the lead in the sixth. Down by two in the seventh
Anna Parnin put the ball in play resulting in an error at short, Capello scored on the play, cutting the lead to one. Mussett picked up her second RBI of the game, scoring
Taylor Vines and tying the game at seven (7). The game would stretch to the 11th inning before Newman knocked in the winning run.
Mussett picked up three (3) hits and two (2) RBI on the day. Acuna recorded two (2) hits, two (2) RBI, and two (2) runs scored.
TAMIU closes out the series tomorrow in Wichita. First pitch is set for 1 pm.
