LAREDO, Texas (April 1, 2016) -- The Texas A&M International University Softball team kicked off a Heartland Conference series with St. Edward's Friday. The Dustdevils took a 0-2 loss in game one before coming back to beat the Hilltoppers 6-1 in game two. TAMIU is now 19-24 overall (7-7 HC).
Game 1: TAMIU 0, St. Edward's 2Game one saw a pitchers duel in the making with both starters throwing shutouts through four. The Hilltoppers would bring two runs across in the fifth. TAMIU was held to one hit through six innings before a rally in the seventh. The Dustdevils put runners on first and second before the final out was recorded, with a final score of 0-2.
Krystal De La Cruz threw seven complete innings. De La Cruz struck out 10 Hilltoppers, allowing two runs on 10 hits.
Game 2: TAMIU 6, St. Edward's 1Brenda Parnin got the offense going for TAMIU in the third inning, lining an RBI double to right center.
Brittany Mussett would drive in a run on a groundout to first, scoring
Taylor Vines from third. Parnin would come around to score on fielders choice off the bat of
Chelsea Capello.
Alyssa Acuna drove in two in the fifth on a double down the left field line. Acuna would come around to score on an errant throw from second base.
Delainy Thompson would pitch a complete game, allowing just one run on eight hits. Thompson picked up her eighth win of the season.
The Dustdevils close out the weekend series on Saturday at Dustdevil Field. First Pitch is set for 12 pm CST.
