SAN ANTONIO, Texas (April 28, 2016) - The Texas A&M International University Softball team pushed five runs across in the first two innings to take game one of the Heartland Conference Tournament 5-4.
Erika Sanchez drove in the first run of the game on an infield single.
Brandi Giles followed that with an two RBI single,
Brittany Mussett and
Alyssa Acuna would score on Giles single. The Hilltoppers scored once in the bottom of the inning, cutting the lead to two.
TAMIU would extend their lead in the second.
Brenda Parnin doubled to left field, scoring
Chelsea Capello. Mussett drove in the Dustdevils fifth run of the game on a single down the left field line, scoring Parnin.
St. Edward's came back score three runs in the sixth, bringing the TAMIU to lead to just one run. The Dustdevils would strand a Hilltopper runner on first in the seventh, winning the ballgame 5-4.
One day after being nominated to the All-Heartland Conference team,
Krystal De La Cruz propelled the Dusdevils to a 5-4 win over the No. 4 seed St. Edward's. De La Cruz went all seven innings, allowing four runs on nine hits, striking out seven Hilltoppers.
TAMIU will be back in action this afternoon against No. 1 seed and host St. Mary's University.
