Dustdevils Set for Showdown with Texas A&M-Kingsville

LAREDO, TEXAS (November 20, 2017) – The Texas A&M International University men's basketball team take their two-game winning streak on the road for a game against Texas A&M-Kingsville (5-0) on Tuesday, Nov. 21, at 7:30 p.m. at the Gil E. Steinke Physical Education Center. The Dustdevils are 3-1 for the first time since 2012-13 after their 65-55 win over Wisconsin-Parkside on Nov. 18. ABOUT TAMIU…
The Dustdevils found their stride last weekend going 2-0 at the River City Classic in San Antonio including an impressive 65-55 victory over Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday evening. Coach Weakley's squad is scoring 70 points per game shooting 45.9% from the field and 41.9% from three. Their 1.16 assist-to-turnover ratio ranks second in the conference.  
 
Junior Xabier Gomez (14.8 ppg, 4.0 rpg) is one of two Dustdevils to have scored in double-digits in the first four games of the season. The Barceloa, Spain product poured in a career-high 18 against Randall followed by a 16-point outburst against Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday night. He ranks 10th in the conference in free throw percentage (88%) going 21-of-26 from the charity stripe.
 
Jeremy Wright (14.5 ppg, 5.8 apg) has been one of the top guards in the conference through four games ranking second in assists and ninth in scoring. He has distributed five or more assists in every game this season including a career-high 8 in the season opening victory over Chadron State on Nov. 10. Dan Milota (14.3 ppg, 4.0 rpg) has scored 15 or more points in all three Dustdevil victories this season going 20-of-39 from the field and 11-of-13 from the free-throw line.
 
After starting the first two games of the season, Kamari Robinson (9.5 ppg, 5.5 rpg) came off the bench at the River City Classic. He leads the team in rebounds (23) while playing 22 minutes per game. 
 
ABOUT TEXAS A&M-KINGSVILLE…
Located in Kingsville, Texas, with an enrollment of 13,246, Texas A&M-Kingsville is 5-0 this season including 2-0 at the friendly confines of the Gil E. Steinke Physical Education Center. The Javelinas are coached by Johnny Estelle who is 43-46 in his fourth season at TAMUK. They were picked to finish fifth in the Lone Star Conference Preseason Poll after making it to the second round of the 2016-17 NCAA Tournament.
 
The Javelinas average 76.6 points per game outscoring opponents by 15.4 points in their five wins this season. They have done most of their damage behind the arc averaging nearly nine triples a game going 44-of-106 (41.6%) from the 3-point line. Senior Trey Sumpter (11.4 ppg, 4.4 rpg) is the lone Javelina averaging double figures on 21-of-41 shooting from the field and 12-of-21 from 3-point range. Jacolby Harris (9.0 ppg, 2.8 rpg) and Derrick Byrd (8.8 ppg) rank second and third on the team in scoring while averaging 21.2 minutes per game.

TAMIU is 4-19 against Texas A&M-Kingsville in a series that dates back to the 2003-04 season when TAMUK defeated TAMIU, 97-64, in Laredo on Nov. 19, 2003. The Dustdevils have lost four straight in the series…

CHOOSE THE WRIGHT
Senior guard Jeremy Wright has been a revelation for the Dustdevils in 2017-18 ranking first on the team in assists (5.8 apg) and steals (2.8 spg). He is also average a career-high 14.5 points per game on 48% shooting and 55% from 3-point range.
 
GO, GO, GOMEZ
Xabier Gomez has been great in his first four games as a Dustdevil averaging a team-high 14.8 points. He scored a combined 34 points in wins over Randall and Wisconsin-Parkside last week in San Antonio including an 18 point, nine rebound performance against the Eagles. He has done most of his damage from the free-throw line going 21-of-26 in 110 minutes of play.

The Dustdevils will host TAMUK on Friday, Nov. 24, at the TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Building at 7:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the Heartland Conference Digital Network.
