Texas A&M International exploded for three second half goals to record a 3-2 win over UT-Permian Basin in the season opener for both teams on Sunday afternoon in Odessa.
Â
UTPB held a 1-0 halftime but TAMIU evened the score when freshman Cristina Ibarra shot a rebounded shot inside the box into the goal in the 46th minute. Sophomore Nicole Cohen then found the net on a header in the 51st minute to give the Dustdevils a 2-1 lead.
Â
Junior Samantha Ruiz then blew past a Falcon defender in the 85th minute en route to a score that pushed the Dustdevils to an insurmountable 3-1 lead. Kaylee Overmeyer scored for UTPB in the 86th minute to cut the Dustdevil lead to 3-2 but time would soon run out on the home team.
Â
Reigning Heartland Conference Offensive Player of the Year Cio Bargallo recorded two assists in the win and freshman goal keeper Elena Rivera recorded six saves on eight shots on goal in her first collegiate start.
Â
Head Coach Felipe Arias is proud of his team's effort in the win.
Â
"First of all, we thank God for the victory." Arias said.
Â
"UTPB is a very good team with athletic players. This win is important because we came back from a 0-1 deficit in the first half to turn it around in the second half. I celebrate the players effort to not give up and fight until the final whistle."
Â
The Dustdevils return to action next Sunday with a neutral site game against Ouachita Baptist. The game will be played at Paul Quinn College in Dallas with a scheduled 1 p.m. kickoff.
