LAREDO, Texas – No. 3 Texas A&M International University men's soccer (12-5-1) captured a 1-0 victory in the quarterfinals of the 2019 Lone Star Conference Championship over the sixth-seeded West Texas A&M Buffaloes (8-7-2). The Dustdevils have now collected a pair of 1-0 wins over the Buffs in the 2019 campaign.
West Texas tested Dustdevil goalkeeper Josh Jones early with a Kenny Brown on-target attempt 5:15 in. David Martinez put TAMIU in the shot column at the 20:50 mark while Cem Izgec followed with a shot of his own 38 seconds later that misfired to the left side of the net.
WT's Liam Doyle fired the final shot of the half but was off target to send the scoreless match into intermission.Â
The match was settled in the 66th minute when Magnus Poulsen placed a pass in the box that was finished on a header by Ruben Nielsen that slipped past West Texas goalie, Alexander Vencel.Â
Following the goal, TAMIU took five more shots on goal to cap off the shutout win.
Jones made a trio of saves without surrendering a goal while Vencel made six saves in defeat for the Buffs.
The Buffs held the advantage in shots (17-11) and corner kicks (8-5) while the Dustdevils led the way in shots on goal (7-3). Â

With the win, TAMIU advances to the semifinals of the LSC Championship and will take on second-seeded Midwestern State (13-4-0). The match is set for Friday, Nov. 15 at 5 p.m. at Sigma Beta Chi Field in San Antonio, Texas.
