OKLAHOMA CITY – Texas A&M International women's basketball (3-3, 1-1 LSC) suffered a 80-68 Lone Star Conference road setback on Saturday afternoon to the Oklahoma Christian University Eagles (2-2, 2-0 LSC).
The Dustdevils took control to start the game as they compiled the first eight points of the game. Nicole Heyn and Patrycja Jaworska knocked down back-to-back three-pointers, respectively, in a span of 15 seconds while Josselin Geer capped off the spurt by converting on a layup with 8:25 showing on the game clock.
The Eagles quickly responded by scoring the next nine-straight points, including a pair of layups by Kendall Blackburn, to give OC a one-point advantage (9-8) at the 4:01 mark in the first quarter.
Later in the opening stanza, Julynne Da Silva Sa finished a layup with 1:30 remaining and 22 seconds later, Jaden Gonzales dished a pass to Jaworska who converted from beyond the arc to give the Dustdevils a five-point advantage (16-11).
The Eagles closed out the quarter scoring the final six points on three-pointers by Maddison Collyer and Megan Shelton, respectively, to give them a slim one-point lead (17-16).
In the second quarter, Da Silva Sa found Geer who finished a shot from long distance who cut TAMIU's deficit to six (30-24) at the 4:28 mark. Following Geer's bucket, the Eagles stepped on the gas and scored the final six points of the half including a three-pointer by Kendra Levings, to put the Eagles up by a dozen heading into the break (36-24).
In the third quarter, the Dustdevils tried to counter by scoring seven-straight points from 9:04-7:39 that began with a three-pointer by Jaworska and was followed up by four shots from the charity stripe by Geer to slash TAMIU's deficit to single digits (40-31).
Between the 6:00 mark and the 4:34 mark, the Dustdevils and the Eagles exchanged baskets and featured Clara Fernandez connected with Heyn twice for three-pointers before Katie Mayo finished a layup on a pass from Megan Shelton to give OC a 49-39 edge.
TAMIU would close out the third quarter by scoring the final four points that were tallied on a layup by Eva Langton and was followed up by a pair of free throws by Jaworska to bring the Dustdevils within eight (56-48) heading into the final quarter.
In the fourth period, the Dustdevils tried to mount a comeback by compiling a 10-2 run that started with a Fernandez shot from long distance at 6:01 and concluded with a three-pointer by Geer to bring TAMIU's deficit back down to eight (68-60) with 2:32 left to play.
Oklahoma Christian's Katie Mayo scored five-straight points, including a three-point play, to settle the 80-68 victory for the Eagles.
For the Dustdevils, Geer recorded team highs of 19 points and a trio of steals while also grabbing five rebounds. Heyn finished the game with 16 points including a game-high four three-pointers and a team-high six boards. Jaworska put together 15 points while going a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line.
Mayo finished with game highs of 21 points (8-of-11 FG, 4-of-5 FT) and eight rebounds. Collyer finished with a double-double that consisted of 13 points to go with a game-high 10 assists.
In the end, Texas A&M International shot 35.5 percent (22-of-62) from the field, 31.3 percent (10-of-32) from three-point range and 73.7 percent (14-of-19) from the free-throw line while the Eagles shot 54.2 percent (32-of-59) from the floor, 30.4 percent (7-of-23) from beyond the arc and 69.2 percent (9-of-13) from the charity stripe. The Dustdevils held the advantage in rebounds (38-33) and steals (11-8) while the Eagles led the way in blocks (4-1) and assists (29-14).
TAMIU continues its eight-game road trip in non-conference play on Friday, Nov. 29 and will take on Western Oregon (2-2) at 6 p.m.
