AUSTIN, Texas -Â Texas A&M International baseball (8-14) swept Huston-Tillotson (4-17) in a doubleheader on Tuesday.
GAME 1 - TAMIU 8, HT 7
The first game was a pitcher's duel for the first four innings, with neither pitching staff giving up a run.Â
The Dustdevil offense came alive in the fifth, breaking out for five runs. Matthew Rosales brought in the first run as he scored Andrew Holsey with a RBI single. Matthew Trevino later drove in Obi Obinwa with a RBI single of his own. The scoring was capped off with a Hunter Trinidad three-run blast, bringing home Trevino and Adrian Castillo for a 5-0 lead.Â
TAMIU would an insurance run in the sixth when Holsey hit a solo shot, pushing the lead to 6-0. Unfortunately, that lead was erased in the bottom half, as the Rams put seven runs across to take a 7-6 lead. The first three runs came in on a RBI single and a two RBI single, respectively. One run crossed on a bases loaded walk, with the final three runs scoring on an E6.
The Dustdevils responded in the seventh as Trinidad drove in the go ahead runs with a two RBI double, bringing home Trevino and Obinwa. TAMIU sealed the win 8-7 as HT went quietly in the bottom half of the inning.
Jacob Williamson (1-1, 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO) earned his first win of the season in the victory. Jacob Hubbard (2.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB 0 BB, 2 SO) took the loss.
GAME 2 - TAMIU 3, HT 2
The second game also featured stellar pitching performances, with both starters working perfect first innings.
The Dustdevils broke through in the second for two runs. Daniel Espinoza brought home Nate Campos with a RBI double for the first run of the game. An error by the shortstop later would score Espinoza, giving TAMIU a 2-0 lead. They would tack on an insurance run in the fourth as an error by the right fielder scored Obinwa, pushing the lead to 3-0.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh, the Rams tried to mount a comeback scoring a run on a ground out to first. A RBI single would pull them with in run. However, a strikeout would give the Dustdevils the 3-2 victory.
Hugo Mendiola (1-3, 6.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 SB) earned his first win of the season after pitching six outstanding shutout innings. Myles Campbell (3.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 SO) took the loss.
