OKLAHOMA CITY -Â Texas A&M International baseball (10-21, 1-4 HC) split a doubleheader with Oklahoma Christian (19-8, 3-2 HC) on Friday.
GAME 1 - OC 7, TAMIU 5
After both starters pitched perfect first innings, the Dustdevils got on the board first in the bottom of the second as Matthew Rosales blasted a lead off homer over the left center field wall. They pushed across an insurance run in the third inning as a fielder's choice brought home Daniel Espinoza to take a 2-0 lead.Â
The Eagles got on the board in the bottom half of the inning as a run came home on a wild pitch.
TAMIU responded in with three more runs in the fifth inning. Jorge Napoles drove in two runs with a double, scoring Anthony Handel and Andrew Holsey and taking a 5-1 lead. OC cut the lead to 5-3 in the bottom half with a two RBI single.
The Eagles would take their first lead at 7-5 in the bottom of the sixth with four runs. The first two runs came across with a two RBI double. The other two scored on a two RBI single, taking the 7-5 victory.
Gabe Rodery (5-0, 6.0 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO) earned the win, with Jared Price (7) earning the save. Justin Diaz (0-1, 1.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 0 SO) suffered his first loss of the season.
GAME 2 - TAMIU 11, OC 9
Just like the first game of the twin bill, the Dustdevils jumped on the board first, this time in the first inning. Holsey would score the game's first run, coming home on a double play. Adrian Castillo brought home Handel with a double down the left field line to take a 2-0 lead early.
The TAMIU offense would explode for fours runs in the third inning to take a 6-0 lead. Holsey led off the inning with solo shot over the left field fence. Rosales and Napoles scored on a throwing error by the second baseman during a Matthew Trevino single. The Dustdevils tacked on three more runs in the fourth. Napoles scored Holsey with a RBI single, and Rosales went yard for the second time bringing home Napoles and pushing the lead to 9-0.
The Eagles finally got on the board in the bottom half of the fourth with three runs scored. A solo blast, a RBI single and a sacrifice fly to left field brought home the runs, cutting into the lead 9-3.
TAMIU added to their lead in the sixth inning as Jorge Napoles would hit his own solo dinger, pushing the lead to 10-3.
OC cut into the advantage 10-6 in the seventh inning as they scored three runs. A RBI double, a RBI ground out and error by the second baseman scored the runs.Â
The Dustdevils answered with another run in the top of the eighth, as Trevino tripled down the right field line, scoring Castillo. The Eagles again continued to trim the deficit as they put across two more runs on a RBI suicide squeeze bunt and a RBI fielder's choice, cutting the lead to 11-8.
OC would try one last time to rally in the bottom of the ninth, but would come up short and only bring home one run. TAMIU took a 11-9 victory.
Andrew Pavon (2-1, 6.1 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 4 BB, 4 SO) earned the win, with J.J. Sanchez (1) picking up his first save of the season. Connor Litterell (2-1, 2.2 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO) suffered his first loss of the season.
The Dustdevils will look to take the series tomorrow as both teams face off in the rubber match at noon.
