TAMIU Drops Heartbreaker To Tarleton

LAREDO, Texas - Texas A&M International women's basketball (10-17, 7-14 LSC) dropped a heartbreaker 70-59 to Tarleton (20-7, 14-7 LSC) on Thursday.

Junior Nicole Heyn led the Dustdevils with a career-high 26 points as well as five rebounds, two assists and three steals. Patrycja Jaworska posted 13 points with four rebounds, four assists and a steal.

The first quarter was incredibly close with neither team able to get much more than a two possession lead. After the Texans drained a three pointer in the opening moments of the game, TAMIU steadied themselves and went on an 8-2 run to take a 11-5 lead a little more than halfway through the period. TSU responded with a 7-1 run to tie things at 12-12 going into the second quarter.

The Dustdevils opened the second quarter with back-to-back threes from Jaden Gonzales to go back up 18-12. The Texans punched back with a 7-0 run to retake the lead 19-18 with just over five minutes left in the half. From there, the teams traded the lead six times and tied twice down the stretch. TAMIU came out on top and took a 28-27 lead into the intermission.

After the break, the Dustdevils went back to work and opened the half on a 10-2 run to take their largest lead of the game at 38-29. The Texans slowly began to chip away at the deficit and managed to close out the period on an 8-2 run to pull within three points, 42-39, going into the final 10 minutes.

In the fourth quarter, TSU began to turn up the heat and retook the lead 48-47 just three minutes into the period. TAMIU battled to take the lead back momentarily at 49-48, only to lose it again on the next possession. The Texans went on an 11-2 run to take the lead 59-51 with 4:24 left. They finished the game on a 8-5 run to take the victory 70-59.

The Dustdevils will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 29 as they host Texas Woman's in the regular season finale on Senior Day.
