SAN ANTONIO, Texas – TAMIU freshman
Malvin Boen set the Dustdevils all-time 8K record and both the men's and women's cross country teams brought home victories in the Our Lady of the Lake Invitational.
In the men's 8K race, Boen not only set the program benchmark, but also won the meet, with a time of 24:27.8.
The Dustdevils took the top three spots, with junior
Nicholas Martinez placing second with a time of 24:47.3 and sophomore
Gideon Kipon placing third with a time of 24:47.6.
Freshman
Colfin Kipsiwa placed in the top 10, finishing sixth with a time of 25:13.5. Junior
Jose Esqueda placed 11th for TAMIU with a time of 25:37.2.
Ruben Martinez (13th- 25:47.5),
Ruben D. Martinez (23rd- 26:23.8) and
Daniel Villarreal (27th-26:44.8) rounded out the men's order.
As a team, the Dustdevils had a total time of 2:04:53 and an average time of 24:58.
In the women's 6k race, TAMIU's women again finished in synchronization, placing all five runners in the top seven.
Freshman
Victorine Kiprop led the Dustdevils in second place, breaking the tape with a time of 22:29.0. Freshmen
Beverlyne Kipchumba and
Rose Iminza placed third and fourth with times of 22:32.1 and 22:32.9, while senior
Claudette Soto and sophomore
Faith Kiprotich completed the race in sixth and seventh respectively, with a time of 22:49.1 and 23:05.4.
As a team in the victory, the Dustdevils total time was 1:53:28 and the average time was 22:41.
"The men and women bounced back fro a tough outing at the Chile Pepper Invitational where they ran in the Division I division," said head coach
Benny Rodriguez. "Today's race was a display of all the hardwork they have been putting in. We still have a bit of work to do before conference [LSC Championships] and our hope is that we stay healthly as we descend into conference."
With the regular season concluded, both teams now have two weeks to prepare for the Lone Star Conference Championship in Lawton, Okla. on Saturday, Oct. 23.
