LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas A&M International men's and women's cross country, two weeks removed from an impressive showing at the Lone Star Conference Cross Country Championships, traveled to Lubbock, Texas to race in the NCAA Division II South Central Region Cross Country Championships. In the end, the women placed 12th as a team, with the men placing 20th.
In the women's race, it was the best finish TAMIU has ever had in the regional championship. The Dustdevils averaged 22:42 per runner with five placing in the top 75 of the 174-runner field.
Two freshmen led the way for TAMIU, as
Victorine Kiprop and
Beverlyne Kipchumba placed 61st and 62nd with time of 22:33.00 and 22:34.7. Following behind was junior
Faith Kiprotich who placed 65th with a time of 22:37.6 and in fourth for the Dustdevils was freshman
Rose Iminza with a time of 22:41.5 to place 67th. Senior
Karla Resendez rounded out the field of Dustdevils, placing 73rd with a time of 22:58.4.
In the men's 10k race, TAMIU again had the best finish in a regional, placing 20
th of 26 teams. The Dustdevils averaged a time of 33:42 for the meet.
TAMIU saw two top 100 performances as freshman
Malvin Boen took 70
th with a time of 32:39.26 and junior
Nicholas Martinez placed 96
th with a time of 33:00.45.
Three other Dustdevils rounded out the field, as
Colfin Kipsiwa narrowly missed the top 100 placing 111
th with a time of 33:35.77.
Jose Esqueda brok the tape for TAMIU at 34:21.75 to finish 132
nd and Ruben R. Martinez rounded out the order in 147
th with a time of 35:07.25.
That concludes a successful 2021 season for cross-country, who saw both teams win a meet, and both place top five in the LSC Cross Country Championship. The runners will now take some time off before beginning to prepare for the 2022 season.
