LAREDO, Texas - Texas A&M International volleyball set a program record for wins in season since joining NCAA Division II, taking down Lubbock Christian, 3-1, for win 16 on the year.
The first set belonged to Lubbock Christian (9-14, 5-7 LSC) who won by a score of 25-18, using a late 7-2 run to take the set.
TAMIU (16-5, 7-1 LSC) bounced back to take sets two through four. In set two, the Dustdevils took the win 25-20, thanks in part to a 7-1 run early in the set to settle in a seven point lead.
In set three, it was even throughout until late, when TAMIU used a 6-0 run to hold a 21-15 lead. However, the Lady Chaps pushed through with a 6-0 run of their own to tie the set 24-24. The Dustdevils would scored the only two points from there to close out the set 26-24.
The final set saw TAMIU trailing 19-13 just over midway through. The Dustdevils would score seven of the next eight points to tie the set 21-21 and then seal the game 25-23.
Leading the way for TAMIU offensively was senior
Megan Menchaca who had 21 kills. Graduate student
Mackenzie Catalina put a double-double performance together with 17 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore
Giulia Hortelan had 12 kills and 17 digs for the double-double, with sophomore
Lixai Perez having the team high of 19 digs.
Freshman setter
Emma Lade had another fantastic game, putting together 47 assists with 12 digs for her own double-double.
The Dustdevils conclude their three-game home stretch on Wednesday, Oct. 19 when they host St. Mary's. Opening serve from the KCB is set for 6 p.m.
