Figueroa Clinches Spot at National Championship

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Texas A&M International junior Mauricio Figueroa clinched a spot in the NCAA Division II National Championship on Saturday after finishing in fourth place at the NCAA Division II West/South Central Regional Tournament.

Figueroa sat in a tie for fifth place after the second round but shot -2 (70) over the final 18 holes to finish -4 (212) over 54 holes. He shot 72 on day one, 70 on day two, and 70 on day three.

During the third round, he shot birdie on holes four, 12, and 16 to counter a bogey on hole 17. He finished one stroke behind third place and held a one-stroke lead over three other golfers.

The top five teams and the top two individuals on non-advancing teams qualified for the NCAA Championship. The three golfers that finished ahead of Figueroa were all part of teams that qualified, so Figueroa was the highest-placing individual from a non-advancing team.

The National Championship will take place from May 22-26 at Avalon Lakes in Warren, Ohio.
