LAREDO, TEXAS— For the first time in program history, the Dustdevils receive back-to-back Lone Star Conference Golfer of The Week honors with Senior Margret Nyamukondiwa winning this week's Southern Colorado Open and Senior Juan Monckeberg winning last week in the Oak Tree Invitational.
On Monday during the Southern Colorado Open, Nyamukondiwa took the lead in the final round, moving up two spots tying for 1st place with rounds of 73 and 70 to finish 1-under par. The senior from Harare, Zimbabwe recorded nine birdies over two rounds and claimed the second top five finish in the season helping her team tie third in the 15 team event.
Rodolfo Gonzales, Head Coach of Men's and Women's Golf, spoke about Nyamukondiwa.
"Margret is an amazing person and has been our leader. A pleasure to coach. She quietly adapts to anything, works hard, and is dedicated to the University and program. She is most deserving of this win. "
Last week during the Oak Tree Invitational hosted by Oklahoma Christian, Senior Juan Monckeberg, finished first for the second time of his TAMIU career. Monckeberg won the 36-hole course through single digit weather with rounds of 72 and 69 posting his fourth top 10 finish in his career.
Coach Gonzales also shared his thoughts on Juan Monckeberg.
"Juan has become much more mature, manages emotions well, and simply has become a smarter golfer. He is very dedicated to his game and that is what high performers do. Juan is a high performer."
TAMIU Golf continues play April 6-7th with the men in the RJGA Palm Valley Classic, and women heading to the West Texas Desert Invite.
