Dustdevils Drop Twinbill to No. 6 West Texas A&M

LAREDO, Texas — West Texas A&M completed a doubleheader sweep of Texas A&M International on Sunday, taking Game 1, 5-1, before powering past the Dustdevils, 19-6, in five innings in Game 2.

A four-run fourth inning proved decisive as the Buffs pulled away in the opener.

West Texas A&M got on the board early with a solo home run in the first, then broke the game open in the fourth behind a three-run homer from Brooke Janning and an RBI groundout to extend the lead to 5-0.

TAMIU was limited to four hits but avoided the shutout in the seventh when Isabella Perez delivered a solo home run to left field for the Dustdevils' lone run.

Nevaeh Herrera took the loss in the circle, allowing five runs (four earned) over 3.1 innings. Celeste Apaez provided a bright spot in relief, tossing 3.2 scoreless innings to keep the game within reach.

The nightcap turned into an offensive surge for the Buffs, who scored in every inning and piled up 19 runs on 15 hits.

West Texas A&M built a commanding lead early, highlighted by a five-run third inning that featured a grand slam from Jordyn De Los Santos to push the margin to 10-0. The Buffs added six runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to put the game out of reach.

TAMIU responded with its best offensive frame in the third, scoring five runs on six hits. Queenandra Dunn drove in two runs with a double, while Alondra Rodriguez added a two-RBI single to help cut into the deficit. The Dustdevils added one more run in the fifth.

Kylie Goad was tagged with the loss after allowing 10 runs (eight earned) over 2.2 innings.

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: Alondra Rodriguez is a senior catcher for Texas A&M International University and is currently pursuing a degree in Kinesiology. A native of McAllen, Texas, Alondra is the daughter of Marisol Avalos and Manuel Rodriguez and was born on February 10, 2005.

Rodriguez provided a key spark in Game 2, driving in three runs, including a two-RBI single during TAMIU's five-run third inning. She consistently put the ball in play and helped fuel the Dustdevils' most productive offensive stretch of the day, finishing with a team-high RBI total across the doubleheader.
