SOUTH JORDAN, Utah – Texas A&M International University women's golf wrapped up the Westminster Wasatch Invitational on Monday with a tied-for-sixth team finish, highlighted by freshman Paulina Aguero's runner-up performance at Glenmoor Golf Club.
The Dustdevils finished the two-round tournament at 36-over par, opening with a 16-over first round before closing with a 20-over final round. TAMIU tied Menlo for sixth in the eight-team field.
Point Loma captured the team title at 1-over, followed by Westmont (+15), Westminster (+27), Montana State Billings (+28) and Fort Lewis (+35).
Aguero continued the strong start to her collegiate career with the top performance of the tournament for TAMIU. After opening with a 2-over 74, the freshman delivered a 3-under 69 in the final round to climb 10 spots on the leaderboard and finish tied for second individually at 1-under.
Her final round got off to a rocky start, as a bogey and triple bogey left Aguero 4-over through her first two holes. She responded by playing her final 16 holes at 7-under, capped by a birdie-eagle finish to complete the comeback and post the Dustdevils' lowest round of the tournament.
Aguero finished just two strokes behind Point Loma's Annika Yturralde, who earned individual medalist honors at 3-under.
"Paulina is wasting no time adapting to this level of competition," head coach Rudy Gonzalez said. "After her bad start today, playing her last 16 in 7-under shows her composure and perseverance. Great runner-up finish for our freshman."
Nemo Cheewasupakorn was the next Dustdevil on the leaderboard, tying for 20th at 9-over. Cheewasupakorn opened the tournament with a 1-over 73 before carding an 8-over 80 in the final round.
Pilar Ariaudo tied for 36th at 13-over following rounds of 77 and 80, while Agathe Lacoste tied for 51st at 15-over after rounds of 80 and 79. Lisa Hashem rounded out the TAMIU lineup at 27-over with rounds of 83 and 88.
Aguero's runner-up finish continued an impressive beginning to her freshman season. She also led the Dustdevils at the Travis Roy Memorial Invite in her collegiate debut, helping TAMIU earn a fourth-place team finish.
