April 27, 2012

Final Stats

Austin, Texas - The 2012 Texas A&M International University softball campaign came to a close Friday night in Austin, as the Dustdevils were eliminated from the conference tournament with a 2-0 loss to UT-Permian Basin.

Yet again errors played a major role in the outcome of the game as the Dustdevils committed two in the bottom of the sixth - three total - allowing the Falcons to score their only two runs of the game.

The two starting pitchers went punch for punch through five scoreless innings until the Falcons took advantage of TAMIU's miscues in the sixth. After a ground out by Tommie Ellard to lead off the inning, Lucero Porras connected on a single to left field followed by a Chelsey Morgan fly out. With two away Cene Padilla singled to center field and advanced to second on an error by Rochelle Nash sending Porras to third. The next batter Katelyn Stanley sent a single to shortstop Alexis Gonzalez, who sailed the throw to first allowing both Porras and Padilla to come around. Winning pitcher Desiree Valero retired the Dustdevils 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh to seal the victory for the Falcons.

Despite taking the loss, freshman pitcher Sarah Johnson threw a superb game allowing no earned runs on four hits with three strikeouts and a walk through 6.0 innings.

TAMIU managed only four hits in the game coming off the bats of Alexis Gonzalez, Sam Carrillo, Emilty Smith and Esme Gonzalez.

The Dustdevils finish the season with an overall record of 18-37, 8-7 in conference play.
