Box Score 2 KINGSVILLE (February 10, 2013) – The TAMIU softball team took two tough losses on the final day of the Javelina Softball classic falling via the run rule in back-to-back games to Midwestern State University 8-0 and Texas A&M Kingsville 11-3.
The Dustdevils finished the tournament with a 1-3 record, falling to 4-6 overall on the season.
GAME ONE: TAMIU 0, Midwestern State 8
Midwestern State racked up 14 singles while freshman pitcher Laci Belovsky held the Dustdevils to only two hits.
The Mustangs jumped all over TAMIU starting pitcher Kyndall Reaves in the first and never looked back. Courtney Bingham, Christina Roosmalen and Katelyn Vinson all delivered RBIs in the opening frame while Elena Bennett stole home as the Mustnags jumped out to a 4-0 lead.
MSU added two more runs in the second as Kim Jerrick scored on a wild pitch and Kelley Schaefer served a two-out single to center field to plate Bingham to push the advantage to 6-0.
Bennett pushed the lead to 7-0 in the fourth when she reached on a leadoff single to left field, stole second and third before scoring on a throwing error by Rochelle Nash.
The Mustangs forced the mercy rule in the fifth on a pinch-hit single down the left field line by Chelsey Wall to lead off the inning. Jerrick was intentionally walked and Bennett reached on an infield single to load the bases before Bingham cracked a run-scoring single to left field to end the game.
Esme Gonzalez and Desiree Ramos were the only two Dustdevil players to register hits. Reaves threw 4.1 innings allowing eight runs on 14 hits with two walks.
GAME TWO: TAMIU 3, Texas A&M Kingsville 11
TAMIU pitching struggled again in the late game allowing 11 runs on 12 hits over five innings. After scoring one in the first, the Javelinas added two in the third and five in the fourth for an 8-0 lead.
Kristen LaBuhn drove in TAMIU’s first runs of the day in the fifth with a two-RBI double to left field, before Mariena Gallardo gave the Dustdevils their final run of the tournament scoring LaBuhn on an RBI single up the middle.
Kingsville answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to end the game.
Salina Mitchell dropped to 1-3 on the season with the loss giving up right runs on 10 hits through 3.1 innings. Sarah Johnson gave up three runs on two hits in relief with two walks and two strikeouts.
The Dustdevils will be at home for the first time this season hosting Texas A&M Kingsville in a double header on Tuesday. The Dustdevils and Javelinas will get underway at 12 p.m. at Dustdevil Field.
