Softball Sweeps Day Two of Tournament Play

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WICHITA FALLS (February 16) – After struggling on the opening day of the Holiday Inn at the Falls Invitational, the TAMIU Softball team rebounded for two straight wins on Saturday blasting Eastern New Mexico University 16-6 before holding off Arkansas Tech University 7-5.
 
In the early game TAMIU gave up three runs over the first two innings before exploding for five in the third and 11 in the fourth to put the game out of reach.
 
Ten different TAMIU players recorded at least one hit versus the Zias, as the Dustdevils racked up a season-high 13 hits.  The trio of Eastern New Mexico pitchers issued 11 total walks while allowing ten different Dustdevil players to tally at least one RBI.  TAMIU recorded four extra base hits including the first homeruns of the season from Mariena Gallardo and Desiree Ramos.
 
Junior Salina Mitchell went the distance for TAMIU in the circle, allowing six runs on ten hits with two strikeouts to pick up her second win of the season.
 
Elizabeth Vasquez oubled with one out in the bottom of the first inning and scored the first run of the game on a two-out RBI single from Alberta MedinaEastern expanded its lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the second on a RBI single from Sirag and a ground out from Velasquez.
 
TAMIU sent 12 batters to the plate in the third inning and plated five runs, including three on a homer from Ramos. The Zias capitalized on three errors in the bottom of the frame to plate three runs and take a 6-5 lead. The Dustdevils responded with 11 runs in the top of the fourth and the game was ended after Eastern's at bat in the fifth inning.
 
In the late game the Dustdevils scored four in the opening frame and took advantage of three Arkansas Tech errors in the fourth to pick up their second win of the day.
 
The Golden Suns were led by Siarra Gomez who turned in a spectacular performance, homering in all three of her at bats driving home all five of Arkansas Tech’s runs.
 
With the exception of Gomez, Kyndall Reaves was nearly untouchable giving up only one hit to another Golden Suns player.  Reaves picked up the complete game win giving up five runs on four hits with four strikeouts.
 
Kristen LaBuhn and Cassandra DeLeon each belted RBI doubles in the first, before Chelsea Capello roped a two-out bases loaded single to spot TAMIU a 4-0 lead. 
 
Gomez homered in the second and again in the fourth to pull the Golden Suns to within one run.  After a leadoff walk to start the bottom of the fourth, Capello and Esmeralda González hit back-to-back singles to load the bases.  Consecutive errors by the Arkansas Tech’s second baseman and right fielder allowed two runs to come across, before a sac-fly from Gallardo gave TAMIU a 7-3 cushion.
 
Gomez blasted a two run homer in her final at bat of the game, before Reaves retired three straight in the seventh to end the game.
 
TAMIU will conclude tournament play on Sunday afternoon with a rematch versus East Central University.  The Dustdevils and the Tigers will get underway at 11 a.m.
