Nash Named Conference Hitter of the Week

LAREDO (February 18) – As the young softball continues to develop, TAMIU catcher Rochelle Nash is beginning to emerge as one of the top players in the conference

Monday afternoon Nash was selected as Heartland Conference Hitter of the week by conference officials following a monster week at the plate.

The junior from San Antonio finished the week with a .462 batting average totaling 12 hits, three homeruns, eight RBI, and five runs scored.  She struck out only three times in 26 at bats totaling a .517 on base percentage and led TAMIU with two stolen bases on three attempts.

Nash is currently ranked fifth in the conference with a .397 batting average and leads the league with three homeruns.

“Rochelle has done a wonderful job as our two-hole hitter,” said Head coach Scott Libby.  “She is hitting for power and is moving runners over when asked to play the short game.  Her defensive play behind the plate has also exceeded our expectations.”

“She’s a two-time second team All-Conference player as an outfielder, but this year she has taken on the burden of stepping in as our starting catcher and has done a phenomenal job guiding our pitching staff.”

Nash helped the Dustdevils sweep a home doubleheader over Texas A&M Kingsville, before heading to the Holiday Inn at the Falls Invitational held on the campus of Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas.

TAMIU finished with a 3-3 record in tournament play, picking up two wins over Eastern New Mexico University and one against Arkansas Tech.  the Dustdevils' losses came at the hands of East Central University (twice) and host Midwestern State.

The Dustdevils will host Angelo State University in a home doubleheader on Tuesday, before taking part in the St. Edward’s tournament over the weekend.
