Box Score 2 AUSTIN (February 23) – The TAMIU softball team moved to 10-12 on the season after a day one split at the St. Edward’s University softball tournament Saturday afternoon. The Dustdevils started with an 8-0 loss to Texas Woman’s University before coming back for a 3-0 win over Texas A&M Kingsville.
In their opener TAMIU was held to only four hits behind the combined effort of TWU pitchers Katie Hines and Karissa Hartwig,. The Pioneers belted three home runs including a grand slam by the starting pitcher Hines.
TWU scored four runs in the first off Hines’ grand slam and added another in the third off another Hines homer in the third. Megan Leff made it 7-0 in the fourth with a two-run shot before the Pioneers added two unearned runs in the sixth to put the game away.
Sarah Johnson fell to 2-3 on the season, giving up eight runs (six earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts in 5.2 innings.
Rochelle Nash was 2-for-3 at the plate, while
Kristen LaBuhn and
Emily Smith each finished 1-for-3.
In the late game TAMIU starter
Kyndall Reaves delivered her most impressive performance of the season, throwing six shutout innings and walking only one batter to pick up her fourth win of the year.
The Dustdevils scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth before adding an insurance run in the sixth taking advantage of two Javelina errors.
In the fifth
Desiree Ortíz led off with a bunt single to third before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by LaBuhn. Nash followed with a single to put runners at the corners and then Ortiz came across on a double steal to give TAMIU its first run of the game.
Marisa Castillo moved Nash to third on a single through the right side, before a passed ball allowed Nash to score to make it a 2-0 game.
The Javelinas committed back-to-back errors to lead off the sixth putting runners at the corners with no outs for TAMIU. LaBuhn tallied the Dustdevils’ final run of the game with a sac fly to right field to score
Olivia Garcia.
Nash once again led TAMIU at the plate going 2-for-3, while Castillo, Ortiz, and Smith contributed one hit apiece.
The Dustdevils will wrap up tournament play Sunday afternoon with two more games against the same two teams. TAMIU will face Kingsville at 11 a.m. before closing with TWU at 11.
