TAMIU Softball Swept on Final Day of Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 AUSTIN (February 25) – TAMIU softball limped to the finish line of the St. Edward’s University Softball Tournament, dropping their final pair of games on Sunday to Texas A&M Kingsville and no. 14 Texas Woman’s University.
 
The Dustdevils fell to the Javelinas 3-2 in the early game, before getting blanked by Texas Woman’s University 7-0.  The two losses drop TAMIU to 10-14 on the season with a trip to Angelo State for a doubleheader coming up this Saturday.
 
Trailing 3-1 late versus Kingsville, TAMIU rallied to load the bases in the sixth with only one out.  Chelsea Capello brought one run around to score on a sac fly, but Cassie Garcia struck out to end the inning stranding two runners on base.
 
Kingsville pitcher Denise Arnold picked up her first save of the season retiring the Dustdevils in order in the seventh.
 
Kingsville jumped on TAMIU early scoring two runs in the bottom of the first.  After a leadoff single by Rose Stubbs, Carynn Gonzalez delivered an RBI double to the gap in left center to make it 1-0.  A walk and a hit batter loaded the bases for Kodie Garner, who drove home Gonzalez on a sac fly.
 
The Dustdevils pulled within a run in the fourth off back-to-back doubles by Rochelle Nash and Mariena Gallardo, but Adela Gonzalez came through with what proved to be the game winning run for Kingsville in the fifth with a crucial two-out RBI single to give the Javelinas a 3-1 lead.
 
Salina Mitchell took the loss for TAMIU falling to 2-6 on the season.  The junior from San Antonio pitched all six innings for the Dustdevils, allowing three runs on six hits with four strikeouts.  Gallardo was the only Dustdevil player to record multiple hits finishing 2-for-3 at the plate.  The remainder of the TAMIU lineup finished 4-for-21. 
 
In the late game, TWU starter Brandie Lander struck out six and walked only two en route to a complete game shutout win. 
 
The no. 14 Pioneers scored two runs in the top of the first thanks to a two-run homer by Katie Hines with two away.
 
TWU strung five hits together and took advantage of an error in the third to boost their lead to 6-0.  An error at first by Gallardo plated the first run of the frame, before four straight singles resulted in three more.  The Pioneers tallied their seventh run in the fourth on an RBI single by Kendra Sancet.

Kyndall Reaves allowed seven runs, only three earned, on seven hits through 3.1 innings falling to 4-5 on the season.  Gallardo was solid in relief shutting out TWU over the final 3.2 innings while scattering two hits.
 
The Dustdevils will return to action this Saturday traveling to San Angelo four a doubleheader versus Angelo State University.  The two games are scheduled for 12 and 2:30 p.m.
