Box Score 2 SAN ANTONIO (February 1, 2013) – The TAMIU softball team finished 1-1 for the second consecutive day at the St. Mary’s Division-II College Classic, dropping their opening game to Tarleton State 5-4 before rallying in game two to top Incarnate Word 13-10. The split moves the Dustdevils to 2-2 on the season.
Trailing Tarleton State 5-3 after giving up two runs in the top half of the eighth, the Dustdevils got one back in the bottom half but stranded two as the TexAnns took the opener. In the late game TAMIU jumped on Incarnate Word early scoring six in the first and three in the third en route to their second win of the season.
GAME ONE: TAMIU 4, Tarleton State 5
TAMIU struck first versus the TexAnns as
Kristen LaBuhn blasted her second home run of the season with a two run shot to put the Dustdevils up 2-0.
After three scoreless innings, Tarleton cut the lead in half taking advantage of an error by TAMIU third baseman
Chelsea Capello. Ashle Noak grounded into a fielder’s choice allowing Courtney Vroman to come across for an unearned run.
The TexAnns evened the game at two on an RBI single from Vroman in the sixth, then took a 3-2 lead in the seventh off an RBI double by Melody Masye.
With two away in the bottom of the seventh,
Mariena Gallardo sent the game into extra innings scoring
Esmeralda González on an RBI single through the left side.
Tarleton scored a pair in the top of the eighth on RBI singles from Vroman and Noak to 5-3 lead.
The Dustdevils looked poised to steal the game in the ninth putting runners on second and third with one out.
Desiree Ramos scored pinch runner
Salina Mitchell on a sac fly to right field pulling TAMIU within one run. After
Olivia Garcia was hit by a pitch, Gonzalez flied out to left field to end the game.
Mitchell took the loss for the Dustdevils in game one two runs, one earned, on two hits through 1.1 innings. Starting pitcher
Sarah Johnson went 6.2 innings giving up three runs, two earned, on six hits with three strikeouts. Gallardo and
Rochelle Nash each went 2-for-4 at the plate, while LaBuhn finished 1-for-3 with two RBI.
GAME TWO: TAMIU 13, Incarnate Word 10
TAMIU gave up three runs in the top of the first to the Cardinals, but responded with RBI singles from Gallardo,
Marisa Castillo, and
Cassie Garcia in addition to three bases loaded walks to take a 6-3 lead.
Incarnate Word got back in the game with two more runs in the third, but TAMIU answered with three more in the bottom half thanks to an error in right field and a two RBI double from LaBuhn.
After an Incarnate Word run in the fourth, the Dustdevils added four more in the bottom half of the frame to take a commanding 13-6 lead. The Cardinals tacked on three more runs in the fifth, but that’s all TAMIU would allow as the Dustdevils took game two 13-10.
Gallardo picked up her first win of the season, giving up 10 runs on fourteen hits through 4.1 innings.
Kyndall Reaves turned in a spectacular performance in relief, allowing no runs through 2.2 innings with three strikeouts.
LaBuhn led the Dustdevils offense in the nightcap finishing 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBI. Castillo was 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Emily smith was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
The Dustdevils will conclude tournament play on Sunday, facing Eastern New Mexico University at 9:30 a.m., followed by a matchup with Angelo State at 1:30.
