Softball splits for third straight day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN ANTONIO (February 3, 2013) – The TAMIU softball team finished 3-3 at the St. Mary’s Division-II College Classic, topping Eastern New Mexico University 4-3 before falling to undefeated Angelo State University 9-2 on Sunday.
 
Shortstop Kristen LaBuhn was named to the All-Tournament Team totaling nine RBI, two home runs, and a grand slam over the weekend.
 
Emily Smith provided the game winning RBI in the seventh to lift the Dustdevils in the early game, while Angelo State scored seven runs in the third to top the Dustdevils in their tournament finale.
 
GAME ONE: TAMIU 4, Eastern New Mexico 3
 
Esmeralda González, who finished 4-for-4 at the plate in Sunday’s opener, led off the first with a single and was brought around to score on an RBI-double by Mariena Gallardo.  Kristen LaBuhn scored later in the inning on a fielder’s choice as TAMIU jumped out in front 2-0.
 
The Zias responded in the bottom half, scoring two on two-out single by Katie Ramsay bringing around Kyra Siraq who tripled earlier in the inning.  Amy smith evened the game at two, scoring Siraq from third with an RBI-double.
 
The score remained tied at two until the fifth inning, when the Dustdevils took a 3-2 lead on a bases loaded walk.  TAMIU added the eventual winning run in the seventh, when Smith laced a two-out single up the middle to score Salina Mitchell.
 
The Zias mounted a final rally in the bottom half of the seventh, pulling to within one run on a two-out RBI single through the left side by Elizabeth Velasquez.  Kyndall Reaves, who picked up the complete-game win, retired the next batter to give TAMIU the 4-3 win.
 
Reaves improved to 1-1 on the season with the win, going the distance while allowing three runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts.   Gonzalez led TAMIU at the plate with a season high four hits, while Rochelle Nash finished 3-for-4.  Nash and Gallardo each finished the weekend with .429 batting averages.
 
GAME TWO: TAMIU 2, Angelo State 9
 
The Rambelles took the early lead, scoring two runs in the first off a two-RBI single from Darian Dunn.  The Dustdevils cut the lead in half with a two-out RBI single by Gallardo in the top of the third, but ASU blew the game open scoring seven in the bottom half. 
 
Kacie Easley scored on a sac-fly from Ambra Hill, before Amanda Wilhelm took Gallardo deep to left for a two-run homer.  Gallardo loaded up the bases with two talks and a hit batsman, before Morgan Spearman delivered a grand slam over the left field wall to make it a 9-2 game.

Cassandra DeLeon gave TAMIU their second run of the game on an RBI-single in the fifth, but that’s all the Dustdevils could muster as they dropped the late game 9-2.

Salina Mitchell fell to 1-2 on the year with the loss to Angelo State, giving up seven runs on seven hits with three walks through 2.2 innings.  Gallardo pitched the remainder of the game, surrendering two runs on four hits with a walk.  Gallardo was the only Dustdevil player to record multiple hits, finishing 2-for-2 with an RBI.
 
The Dustdevils will return to action on Saturday, traveling to Kingsville to take part in the Texas A&M Kingsville Invitational.  TAMIU will open tournament play Saturday morning against Midwestern State University, before taking on the Javelinas at 11:30.  Sunday’s slate of games pits the Dustdevils against Midwestern State and Texas A&M Kingsville once again.
