Box Score 2 KINGSVILLE (February 9, 2013) – The TAMIU softball team dropped their opening game to Midwestern State University 9-1, before rebounding with a 3-2 win over Texas A&M Kingsville on the opening day of the Javelina Softball Classic Saturday morning at Hubert Field.
In the early game the Mustangs jumped all over the Dustdevils early, scoring all nine runs over the first three innings taking the game via the run-rule in five. In their second matchup of the day, Marissa Castillo drove in the game winning runs with a two-RBI double in the fifth after an error by Kingsville third baseman Lex Cordova extended the inning.
Sarah Johnson took the loss in the opener giving up nine runs on eight hits through two innings. Esme Gonzalez picked up the win in game two giving up just two runs on seven hits, before Johnson threw 2.1 scoreless innings in relief.
GAME ONE: TAMIU 1, Midwestern State 9
After a leadoff walk to start the game, Elana Bennet reached on a bunt-single before Kelley Schaefer delivered a two-run single to left field to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead. Christina Roosmalen added two more for MSU with her first home run of the season, a two-run shot over the left field fence.
Jerrick and Bennett kept things going in the second with back-to-back one-out singles, then came around to score on Courtney Bingham's two-run triple to the left-field gap to push the advantage to 6-0.
Jerrick made it a 9-0 game in the third with a two-run double to the left-field gap to put the game out of reach.
GAME TWO: TAMIU 3, Texas A&M Kingsville 2
Emily Smith gave TAMIU its first run of the game in the second with an RBI-single to center field plating Cassie Deleon who doubled earlier in the inning.
The Javelinas pulled even in the bottom half of the inning with a bases loaded walk. Carynn Garcia led the inning off with a single and moved to second on a one-out hit by Courtnee White. Rose Stubbs loaded the bases by reaching on a single before Jaleen Castro walked to bring in Garcia.
After three scoreless innings, Castillo broke the tie with her two-run double in the fifth. Esme Gonzalez led off the inning with a single and after two straight outs, an error by Kingsville third baseman Lex Cordova extended the inning. Castillo followed with a clutch double into left field to give the Dustdevils a 3-1 lead.
Kingsville added a run in the bottom half of the fifth before nearly pulling even in the sixth. Cordova doubled to lead off the inning and pinch runner Corina Noel moved to third on a passed ball. After Bailey Offill struck out swinging, Zoila Olguin was hit by pitch. The game ended when she was called out as White popped up into an infield double play to end the game.
The Dustdevils will return to action on Sunday with a rematch versus Midwestern State at 11:30, before concluding tournament play against Texas A&M Kingsville at 4:30.
