Dustdevils Fall to Newman in Series Finale

Box Score

LAREDO (March 9, 2013) - Newman avoided a sweep of the season-opening three game Heartland Conference series with a 4-2 win over Texas A&M International on Saturday afternoon at Dustdevil Field.

TAMIU was limited to four hits by Newman starter and game winner Kelsey Jones (2-5), with three of those hits come back-to-back in the fourth inning.  NU lead 2-0 going into the fourth but a leadoff single by Kristen LaBuhn and a line drive home run off the left field foul pole by Rochelle Nash tied the score 2-2.  Mariena Gallardo then slapped a single to right field but she would be stranded their after three consecutive putouts.

The score remained tied 2-2 until Newman pitch hitter Taylor Schawe delivered a bases loaded two-RBI single to the right field fence in the top of the sixth inning, providing the Jets with a 4-2 lead.  A dropped pop-up foul ball earlier in the inning by the Dustdevil defense helped lead to Schawe’s tiebreaking opportunity.

TAMIU managed only one hit after the fourth inning, a leadoff single by pitch hitter Cassie Garcia in the bottom of the seventh inning.   Jones then retired the next three Dustdevil batters in order to salvage a win for the Jets.

Sarah Johnson (2-5) took the loss for the Dustdevils.  She allowed four runs on nine hits with five strikeouts and no walks in 5.2 innings of work.
