DENTON (March 13, 2013) – The TAMIU softball team dropped their final two games of the 2013 Best Western Premier Spring Fling, falling to Abilene Christian University 6-5 and to no. 10 Texas Woman’s University 7-2.  The Dustdevils finished 0-3 at the tournament and saw their overall record slip to 13-21 on the season.

TAMIU committed four errors in the opener versus ACU and allowed an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth after battling back from a 5-3 deficit.

The Dustdevils loaded up the bases with no outs in the top of the first, but were only able to come away with two runs to grab the early lead.  After three consecutive singles to lead off the inning, Cassie Garcia was hit by a pitch bringing TAMIU’s first run around.  Cassie Deleon followed with a single to plate Rochelle Nash, but two straight fly outs and a strike out ended the threat.

The Wildcats answered with three runs in the second to take a 3-2 lead, but a two-out double by Cassie Deleon in the top of the third followed by a Chelsea Capello single evened the game at three.  ACU reclaimed the lead in the bottom half with a leadoff solo homer by Courtney Flanary.

After an unearned run in the fourth gave the Wildcats a 5-3 lead, TAMIU’s Nash evened the game with one swing of the bat in the fifth.  The junior belted a two-run home run down the left field line for her team leading fifth homer of the season.

With one away and a runner on first in the sixth, a single into right field by Flanary turned into the go ahead run for ACU.  TAMIU right fielder Esme Gonzalez sailed the throw to second trying to hold Flanary at first allowing Keanna Winkfield to come around to score.

The Dustdevil were retired in order in both the six and seventh innings to seal the win for ACU.

Kyndall Reaves and Salina Mitchell each went three innings for TAMIU.  Reaves allowed five runs on ten hits, while Mitchell allowed only three hits and one unearned run.

Labuhn, Nash, and Deleon each recorded two hits for TAMIU, while Nash also accounted for two RBI.

In the late game TWU scratched the board first scoring two in the first, but Nash blasted her second two-run homer of the day in the third to tie the game at two.  The Pioneers came back with five runs over the fifth and sixth innings to put the game out of reach.

Nash was 4-for-7 on the day with four RBI and Cassie Deleon was 4-for-5 with an RBI.  Mariena Gallardo (3-2) was pegged for the game two loss after allowing seven runs, six earned, on 11 hits with two strikeouts.

TAMIU returns to conference play this weekend traveling to Odessa to battle UT-Permian Basin.  Friday’s double header is set for a 2 p.m. start with Saturday’s game scheduled at noon.
