Softball Drops Game One of Midseason Tourney

Box Score DENTON (March 12, 2013) – The TAMIU softball team took an early lead but couldn’t hold on against Texas Woman’s University, who won game one of the 2013 Best Western Premier Spring Fling 7-1.

Marissa Castillo drove a run home in the top of the second to give TAMIU a 1-0 lead, but the Pioneers answered with three runs in the third and three unearned runs in the fourth to take a big 6-1 lead.  TWU added a final run in the fifth and allowed only one TAMIU batter past second base in the final four innings.

The loss drops the Dustdevils to 13-19 on the season as TAMIU gets set to take on Abilene Christian and TWU again in day two of tournament play.

Cassie Deleon singled with one away in the second, and moved over to second on a ground out by Chelsea Capello.  Castillo then brought Deleon around to score with a single back up the middle to put TAMIU up 1-0.

In the third TWU Senior Lizzy Kelly doubled through the left side to tie the game and Jordan Readicker put the Pioneers on top with an RBI of her own.  Sarah Wittenburg singled to left field to make it 3-1.

TWU added three more runs in the fourth taking advantage of a costly TAMIU error.  An errant throw from Deleon at third allowed the leadoff hitter to take second.  After the runner advanced to third on a wild pitch, she was brought around to score on a sacrifice fly by Amanda Ruiz.  Two batters later Katie Hines made it a 6-1 game with a two-run homer to straight away center.  TWU freshman Ashley Maddox made it 7-1 in the fifth with her second home run of the year.

Sarah Johnson fell to 2-6 on the season with the loss, allowing seven runs, four earned, on 11 hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Hines started in the circle for TWU and tossed a complete-game for her eight win of the season.  She allowed six hits while striking out two batters.  Kelly finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs and a RBI.

Castillo was the only TAMIU player to record multiple hits, while four others finished with one.  Game two of the Best Western Premier Spring fling will get underway at noon against Abilene Christian, before the Dustdevils wrap things up with a 2 p.m. rematch against TWU.
