Dustdevils Drop Doubleheader, St. Edward’s Sweeps Series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 AUSTIN (April 13, 2013) – St. Edward’s University completed their series sweep over the TAMIU softball team, winning both games of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Diane Daniels Field

The Dustdevils hit two solo home runs in the opener, but a big fifth inning for St. Edward’s gave the Hilltoppers a 4-2 win.  TAMIU trailed by only a small margin late in game two, but a four run sixth inning blew the game open as the home team took the second game 7-1.

The two losses dropped the Dustdevils to 17-32 (4-8 HC) on the season and allowed Newman University to pull within one game of TAMIU in the battle for the final spot in the Heartland Conference Tournament.

The Hilltoppers picked up three hits off TAMIU starter Kyndall Reaves to take a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one.  Cassandra DeLeon cut the lead in half in the fourth inning, belting her sixth home run of the season.  Deleon finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

The Hilltoppers led off the fifth with a single and a stolen base, before another single put runners at the corners with no outs.  Lauren Brode then singled scoring Cydney Irvin and an error by second baseman Chelsea Capello allowed Marissa Thome to score to make it a 4-1 game.

Salina Mitchell did her best to get TAMIU back in the game hitting her first home run of the season in the seventh, but that’s all St. Edward’s would allow as the Hilltoppers took the opener 4-2.

Reaves took the loss falling to 6-9 on the season, giving up all four runs on 11 hits with a walk in 4.1 innings.  Mitchell came on in relief and held the Hilltoppers to just one hit in 1.2 innings of work.

St. Edward’s struck first again in game two scoring one in the first and then adding two more over the third and fourth innings to take a 3-0 lead.

Kendall Lucas hit a RBI single in the first and hit a sac fly in the third before Thome plated a run with a sacrifice in the fourth.

TAMIU finally got on the board in the top of the sixth on a RBI single by Mariena Gallardo, but St. Edward’s answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to put the game away.  Sara Debrow, who threw a no hitter against the Dustdevils yesterday, struck out the side in the final innings to give the Hilltoppers the series sweep.

Kristen LaBuhn and Chelsea Capello each finished 2-for-3 at the plate in game two.  Sarah Johnson was the losing pitcher in game two, allowing 13 hits with three walks and two strikeouts over six innings.

TAMIU will step out of conference to host Oklahoma Christian University in a three-game set starting April 19.  The Dustdevils will conclude the regular season on the road battling Oklahoma Panhandle State.
