Dustdevils Close Season With Sweep

Box Score GOODWELL, Oklahoma (April 27, 2013) – TAMIU finished the regular season with a bang, recording 17 hits to complete their three-game sweep over Oklahoma Panhandle State University with a 12-9 win on Saturday.  In total for the series, the Dustdevils totaled 43 hits, 35 runs, eight doubles, and a triple.

Cassandra DeLeon continued her hot streak going 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.  Deleon concluded the series with a .667 batting average, going 8-for-12 with eight RBI, two doubles, and a triple.

Four more TAMIU players recorded multiple hits in Saturday’s game including Chelsea Capello and Cassie Garcia who each finished with three, and Kristen LaBuhn and Desiree Ortíz who both finished with two.

After the Dustdevils took a 1-0 lead in the first, OPSU responded the three runs over the next two innings to take their first lead of the series.  The lead would be short lived however, as TAMIU fired back with a big nine-run fifth to put the game out of reach.

A bases loaded walk gave TAMIU their first run of the inning before Deleon drove home two runs on a single to reclaim the lead for the Dustdevils 4-3.  Two batters later Esmeralda González plated two more runs on a single and LaBuhn did the same to make it 8-3.  Capello and Garcia followed with a single and a double to push two more runs across and give TAMIU a commanding 10-3 lead.

The two teams traded runs over the next two innings until OPSU mounted a serious comeback in their final at bat in the seventh.

Two singles and a one-out double cut the lead to 12-7, before a passed ball allowed the Aggies to pull within four at 12-8.  An error allowed one final run to score before the Dustdevils were able to retire the side and end the game with a 12-9 win.

Kristen LaBuhn (3-10) picked up the win for TAMIU, allowing three runs on five hits with two strikeouts and two walks in 4.0 innings.  Salina Mitchell went the rest of the way giving up six runs on eight hits with one strikeout and one walk.

TAMIU concludes the regular season with an overall record of 21-34 and a 7-8 mark in conference play.  The Dustdevils await the outcome of the Newman vs. UTPB series which got underway Saturday afternoon, to determine their seeding heading into the conference tournament.  The tournament will be held in San Antonio and hosted by the undefeated St. Mary’s Rattlers, starting on Thursday, April 2 with the championship game scheduled for Saturday, April 4.
