DeLeon Named Conference Hitter of the Week

LAREDO (April 29, 2013) - TAMIU starting third baseman Cassandra DeLeon was named Heartland Conference hitter of the week by conference officials Monday afternoon. DeLeon’s stellar performance this weekend helped the Dustdevils sweep Oklahoma Panhandle State University in a three game series to secure their spot in the Heartland Conference tournament.

The sophomore from Corpus Christi finished the series with a .667 batting average, going 8 for 12 at the plate, with 8 RBI’s, two doubles and a triple.

With the series win over OPSU, the Dusdevils finished out their regular season with a 21-34 overall record. TAMIU finished 7-8 in the Heartland Conference to secure their spot in the postseason for a school record fifth straight year.

The Dustdevils will travel to San Antonio, where they play St. Edward’s University in the opening round of the tournament on Thursday, May 2^nd at the SAISD Spring Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
