Dustdevils Conclude Competition at Angelo State

TAMIU goes 1-2 in final three games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 SAN ANGELO, Texas – Texas A&M International saw the weather play a role in its second tournament of the season as it forced the Dustdevils to alter their plans from Southeastern Regional Invitational at Southeastern Oklahoma State to the Angelo State George McCorkle Classic.

With play extending from Saturday to Monday, a forecast of wintery weather again changed the Dustdevils' plans: Drury, which TAMIU was slated to play on Monday, "opted not to play (its) final two games due to potential weather concerns," according to ASU's Sports Information Office.

All in all, the Dustdevils (5-5, 0-0 Heartland Conference) concluded play in the McCorkle Classic with a 5-1 win over Drury on Sunday and a pair of losses to No. 17 Angelo State – a 7-0 defeat on Sunday and a 14-13 edging on Monday.

The Dustdevils will next play at the St. Edward's Round Robin in Austin, Texas, on Feb. 15-16. They will play Regis on Feb. 15 at 9 a.m. and Feb. 16 at 9 a.m.; No. 14 Texas Woman's on Feb. 15 at 1:30 p.m.; and Chadron State at 11:15 a.m. on Feb. 16.

They will open their home season on Feb. 28 against Heartland Conference foe Oklahoma Panhandle State with a doubleheader.

The Dustdevils were silenced by ASU's Sandra Serna (1-0), who recorded the win while allowing TAMIU only three hits in the game.

Esme Gonzalez, Cassandra De Leon and Mariena Gallardo each went 1-for-3.

Gallardo suffered the loss on the mound.

TAMIU 5, Drury 1

The Dustdevils scored five runs off just six hits against the Panthers, led by Brittany Mussett's 2-for-4 day. Gonzalez, De Leon, Desiree Ortiz and Brenda Parnin each stroked a hit as well, with Gonzalez knocking in a run and Ortiz plating three.

Ortiz's three-RBI swing came in just the second inning when she singled to right field and advanced to second on the play. In attempt to pick her off, Drury's catcher made an errant throw that allowed Desiree Ramos, Parnin and Gallardo to score.

Ortiz scored later that inning when Gonzalez belted a double to right-center field. Gonzalez then scored when Chelsea Capello reached on an error.

The Panthers scratched their only run across the plate in the fifth inning off a RBI single.

Sarah Johnson recorded the victory for TAMIU.

The seven-inning runfest saw the Dustdevils score in every inning except the first, although the Rambelles outlasted every burst. Angelo State leapt out to an early five-run lead in the first inning, thanks mainly to a three-run home run by Kenedy Urbany.

They scored three more in the second, a pair in the third and their final four in the fifth inning. Urbany (3-1) recorded the win as well.

The Dustdevils fought back with a run in the second inning when Cassie Garcia doubled to left-center field, scoring Gallardo.

The Dustdevils plated a trio of runs in the third, fouth and fifth innings thanks to a two-RBI home run by Mussett in the third. Cassie Garcia then roped the left-field line with a RBI single.

In the fourth, Gallardo grounded out to second but plated Capello on the play. Kyndall Reaves then reached on a throwing error that scored Mussett and De Leon.

In the fifth, Gallaro flared a two-RBI single into left field to score Capello and Gonzalez. Reaves then doubled to deep center field to plate Gallardo.

Mussett doubled in the sixth inning to score De Leon and Gonzalez, and the comeback fell just short when Gonzalez sent a RBI double to score Parnin in the seventh inning.

All in all, the Dustdevils saw Gonzalez (2-for-6, RBI, 2R), Capello (2-for-5, 3R, walk), Mussett (2-for-4, 4RBI, 2R, walk), Gallardo (2-for-3, 3R, 3RBI, 2 walks), Garcia (2-for-4, 2RBI, walk) and Parnin (2-for-4, R) record multiple hits.
