Box Score 2 AUSTIN, Texas – Texas A&M International opened play at the St. Edward's Softball Invitational on Saturday with a pair of games – including its fifth game against a nationally ranked opponent. The Dustdevils dumped Regis, 11-0, in the early morning game before being nicked by No. 10 Texas Woman's, 2-0.
TAMIU (6-6) will close play at the St. Edward's Invitational on Sunday with a 9 a.m. rematch against Regis (1-8) and a later game against Chadron State (1-6) at 11:15 a.m.
GAME 1: TAMIU 11, Regis 0
A monster 10-run fourth inning saw the Dustdevils steamroll Regis – which managed only two hits off TAMIU starting pitcher Kyndall Reaves (3-1). Reaves went the distance, striking out four of the 17 batters she faced.
Chelsea Capello smacked a RBI single to right-center field in the third inning, scoring Brenda Parnin for a 1-run lead.
The Dustdevils bats exploded in the next inning, starting when Brittany Mussett singled to left field. Mariena Gallardo then walked before Cassie Garcia loaded the bases with a single up the middle.
Reaves cleared the bases with a two-RBI double, scoring Mussett and Gallardo, while Reaves and Gallardo occupied second and third base, respectively. Parnin scored Garcia with a subsequent infield single.
Regis didn't record an out until Krissy Sardelich popped out an attempted bunt. A wild pitch and walk to Esme Gonzalez again loaded the bases, this time for Capello – who again delivered with a RBI single.
That's when Dustdevils' big bat, former Heartland Conference Hitter of the Week Cassandra De Leon belted a grand slam over the left field fence.
Mussett began the Dustdevils' reoccupation of the bases with a single; Gallardo then walked and both runners advanced a base via a wild pitch. Garcia was then walked before Desiree Ramos and Parnin slotted back-to-back RBI singles.
After 10 runs on nine hits, the Dustdevils finally saw the frame close, but the game was already well in hand.
GAME 2: No. 10 TWU 2, TAMIU 0:
The Dustdevils' chorus of singing bats was silenced against the No. 10 ranked team in all of NCAA Division II softball. TAMIU starting pitcher Sarah Johnson (1-1) took the loss while pitching a gem, going the complete game with three strikeouts, two walks and just six hits and two runs allowed.
Texas Woman's brand of small ball downed the Dustdevils, as a timely RBI single in the third inning and a sacrifice fly in the sixth served as the separation between the teams.
TAMIU's offense was led by Reaves, who went 2-for-3. Five other Dustdevils recorded a single hit, but none were able to cross the plate as TWU struck out six Dustdevils.
Only Gonzalez recorded an extra-base hit: a double in the top of the third inning.
