Dustdevils Face No. 8 West Texas A&M In Doubledip

TAMIU falls in tough road doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CANYON, Texas – A stretch of four non-Heartland Conference games in two days kicked off for Texas A&M International as the Dustdevils (7-9, 0-0 Heartland) took on No. 8 West Texas A&M (15-0) in a Friday doubleheader. The Dustdevils fell in both affairs, first dropping a 9-1 affair before closing the day with a 10-0 loss.

TAMIU will remain in Canyon, Texas, on the campus of West Texas A&M to face Cameron in a neutral-site doubleheader on Feb. 22. The Dustdevils will then open their home season and conference season on Feb. 28 against Oklahoma Panhandle State at Dustdevils Field.

GAME 1: WTAM 9, TAMIU 1

TAMIU jumped out to a muscle-flexing lead after former Heartland Conference Hitter of the Week Cassandra De Leon belted her fourth home run and 15th RBI of the season in the first inning.

That run was all the Dustdevils could muster, while the nationally ranked Lady Buffs rattled off a trio of their own long balls. The Lady Buffs scored twice in the first inning, three runs in the third, one run apiece in the fourth and fifth and twice more in the sixth inning.

TAMIU's Kyndall Reaves (3-2) took the loss, while WTAM's Rita Hokianga (8-0) took down the victory in the form of a 1-hitter.

Reaves pitched 4 2/3 innings with three strike outs, three walks and seven runs allowed – six earned. She allowed nine hits.

De Leon was the only Dustdevil to record a hit or reach base all game, going 1-for-2 with a RBI and run scored.

GAME 2: WTAM 10, TAMIU 0

Sarah Johnson (1-3) took the loss in three innings of work with a pair of strike outs and walks. She allowed eight hits and eight runs against the 19 total batters she faced. Hannah Newcomb (5-0) took the win for the Lady Buffs.

Brittany Mussett and Mariena Gallardo were the only Dustdevils to reach base in the game. Mussett went 2-for-2, while Gallardo walked and went 0-for-1 on the day.

The Dustdevils allowed three runs in the first and third innings and two runs in both the second and fourth innings.
