TAMIU Closes Play At St. Mary's Tournament

Dustdevils drop pair to top opposition

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Less than 12 hours after cementing a program-first victory over a top-10 nationally ranked opponent, Texas A&M International dropped its final two games at the St. Mary's NCAA Division II Classic on Monday. The Dustdevils (3-2, 0-0 Heartland Conference) fell to No. 10 Southeastern Oklahoma State, 7-2, in its 11 a.m. game and then fell to Texas A&M-Kingsville, 8-7, via a walk-off bases-loaded hit batter.

The Dustdevils opened the tournament and the season with three straight wins – including a downing of No. 8 Texas Woman's in a game that ended at 12:35 a.m. on Monday morning – but the hangover from five games in three days seems to have caught them. All in all, the Dustdevils played a total 37 innings in a three-day span – including two extra-inning affairs.

The Dustdevils will next travel to the Southeastern Regional Invitational, hosted by SOSU in Durant, Okla. TAMI will open play against Tartleton State at 10 a.m. on Feb. 6.

GAME 1: No. 10 SOSU 7, TAMIU 2

The Dustdevils fell into a 5-0 hole through five innings, before Esme Gonzalez scored the team's first run on a wild pitch. Cassandra De Leon then singled, plating Chelsea Capello for TAMIU's only two runs.

Capello, Gonzalez and De Leon each stroked a double to lead the Dustdevils offensively. De Leon ended her game going 3-for-4 with the team's only RBI. Brittany Mussett went 2-for-4.

Kyndall Reaves (1-1) took the loss from the circle, pitching seven innings with a strike out and no walks. She allowed only four earned runs.

GAME 2: TAMUK 8, TAMIU 7

Mussett belted a long ball and De Leon knocked another two bagger as the Dustdevils fought back from a 7-0 deficit in the third inning, but it wasn't enough as the Javelinas walked off to victory.

TAMIU fell behind after giving up a pair of runs in the second inning and five in the third. But it answered with four of its own in the fourth, one in the fifth and the tying two in the seventh before eventually falling when a run was walked in via a hit batter.

De Leon and Mussett each went 2-for-3 with three and two runs scored, respectively. Mussett also whipped two RBI.

Mariena Gallardo (1-1) took the loss after relieving Sarah Johnson – who went 5.1 innings with a pair of strike outs and walks.
