SAN ANGELO, Texas – Texas A&M International faced East Central and Drury on Saturday in the first day of the Angelo State George McCorkle Classic, splitting the day's doubleheader to improve to 4-3 overall (0-0 Heartland Conference).
East Central won 2-6, while the Dustdevils beat Drury 7-1.
The Dustdevils will continue play at the McCorkle Classic on Sunday with games against Drury (11 a.m.) and No. 17 Angelo State (3:15 p.m.).
GAME 1: East Central 6, TAMIU 1
The Dustdevils jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning when Brittany Mussett doubled to centerfield, plating Chelea Capello and Esme Gonzalez, but ECU answered with five runs of its own in the top of the second inning.
ECU then held TAMIU off the scoreboard while adding another run in the third inning.
Capello was the only Dustdevil with more than one hit, going 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored. Only Cassandra Garciarecorded a hit after Mussett's double.
Mariena Gallardo (0-1) recorded the loss for TAMIU with 2 1/3 innings pitched, while Sarah Johnson pitched 4 2/3 innings of 1-hit ball.
GAME 2: TAMIU 7, Drury 1
TAMIU outhit the Panthers 15-8, led by Mussett's 3-for-4 day with a run scored and a RBI. Gonzalez went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, Capello went 1-for-4, Cassandra De Leon – the defending Heartland Conference Hitter of the Week – went 2-for-5 with a run scored, Brenda Parnin went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Gallardo went 1-for-3 with three RBI.
The Dustdevils scored two in the second inning, two in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh innings.
Kyndall Reaves (2-1) won the game for TAMIU, pitching six innings and allowing eight hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Johnson pitched an inning and struck out one.
