WICHITA, Kan. – In search of its third consecutive Heartland Conference series victory, Texas A&M International found what it sought via a 9-5 rubber-game win over Newman. The Dustdevils (13-20, 6-3 Heartland) utilized seven runs scored in the third and fourth innings combined to take two games from the three games at Newman.
Kyndall Reaves evened her record at 5-5 with the seven-inning complete game, allowing seven hits and five runs – just one earned – with a strike out and a walk.
TAMIU dug itself into a four-run hole in just the second inning, allowing three unearned runs stemming from an infield throwing error. But the Dustdevils answered with a quartet of their own, starting with Victoria Gomez's leadoff double to left field. She took third on a fielding error and scored when the next batter, Anna Parnin, singled to left. Esme Gonzalez reached via the bunt single and Chelsea Capello loaded the bases with a single to center field. Cassandra De Leon grounded out, advancing the runners and plating Parnin, and Brittany Mussett re-loaded the bases with her reaching on an infield error. Brenda Parnin singled, scoring Gonzalez, before Capello scored on a subsequent wild pitch.
Now tied, the Jets scored just their second earned run to take a slim lead in the third. TAMIU bettered that run with three more in the top of the fourth. Gomez reached with a leadoff infield single and Gonzalez singled just a batter later. Capello reached on a shortstop throwing error, taking second on the misplay and seeing pinch runner Samantha Gutierrez score. Gonzalez slid across the plate a batter later on a wild pitch and Capello scored on a Brittany Mussett fielder's choice.
The 7-5 score stood until the sixth inning when De Leon muscled a solo home run over the right-center field fence. One more run in the seventh secured the victory, coming after Anna Parnin singled and was brought home after a Gonzalez sacrifice bunt and a Capello RBI single.
The Dustdevils return home to Dustdevils Field to host the University of Texas of the Permian Basin on March 21-22. The series will begin on March 21 with a noon doubleheader.
